Areas of Focus
Rotary International is dedicated to addressing several pressing global issues through its service projects, which are organized around seven key areas:

Rotary International operates through a structured hierarchy consisting of local clubs, districts, and international governance. Each club is autonomous and conducts its own service projects while adhering to the broader mission of the organization. The clubs are governed by a board of directors, and the international organization is led by an elected president who serves a one-year term.
Membership in Rotary is open to individuals from various professional backgrounds, and while it often requires an invitation to join, many clubs welcome new members actively. The organization emphasizes diversity and inclusivity, encouraging participation from all cultures, races, and creeds.
Through these unique characteristics, Rotary International has established itself as a distinctive and influential force in global humanitarian service and community development.
The Rotary Club of Daniel Island was founded in 2001 and stands out for several reasons that contribute to our uniqueness and special status within the broader Rotary International community.
Community Impact and Recognition
- Award-Winning Service Projects: The club has received recognition from Rotary International for having the best community service project and the best literacy program in eastern South Carolina. This highlights the effectiveness in addressing local needs and promoting literacy initiatives.
- Diverse Community Engagement: Our Club is heavily involved in various community service activities, including providing books to local schools, supporting after-school programs, and delivering food to families in need during holidays. These initiatives directly impact education and welfare in the Daniel Island and surrounding areas like Cainhoy and Wando.
- Annual Charity Duck Race: Known locally as the “Duck Club”, The Rotary Club of Daniel Island hosts an annual Duck Race that has raised over $3 million for local charities and global initiatives over the years. This event not only serves as a significant fundraiser but also fosters community spirit and involvement.
Focus on Literacy and Education
This club prioritizes literacy by donating dictionaries to third graders and engaging in programs that support reading skills development. Their commitment to education is evident in partnerships with local schools and organizations, enhancing learning opportunities for children in the community.
Strong Membership and Fellowship
With a mission centered around “Service Above Self,” the Rotary Club of Daniel Island emphasizes member involvement in both service and social activities. Our Club’s various events throughout the year to strengthen fellowship among members, which is crucial for sustaining engagement and community service efforts.
Global and Local Commitment
The club embodies the Rotary principle of “think globally, act locally.” While we focus on local community needs, our Club also contributes to global initiatives, such as funding for Alzheimer’s research, efforts to eradicate polio, clean water and sanitation, and other global projects. This dual focus enhances their impact both locally and internationally.
